Who we are and what we actually do
A plain account of the business — because you deserve to know who you're booking with.
Historyvoyagez is a family-run heritage tour operator based in Nakuru, Kenya. We design and lead guided tours across three distinct service areas: Colonial & Settler History tours in and around Nakuru town, Pre-Colonial Heritage Trails through the Rift Valley's indigenous community sites, and Cultural Experience sessions with host families and community elders. We serve individual travellers, school groups, researchers, journalists, and diaspora Kenyans returning to understand places they left before they were old enough to ask questions. Our operating area covers Nakuru county and reaches into Baringo and Laikipia for specific trail programmes. We have been running paid tours since 2017, starting with two-person weekend walks and growing — slowly and deliberately — to the current schedule of five tour days per week. Every guide who works with us is either a family member or someone personally trained and assessed by us over a minimum of six months. We do not use tour aggregators or outsource guiding to agencies.
How we work — and where we don't cut corners

Our grandfather Joseph Wachira began walking interested visitors through Nakuru's colonial-era buildings in the early 2000s — unpaid, out of conviction that these buildings deserved to be understood rather than ignored. His daughter Miriam formalised the practice in 2017, registered the business, developed relationships with Egerton University's history faculty, and built the community partnerships that underpin the Pre-Colonial Heritage Trails. Today Miriam leads the business alongside her son David, who manages logistics and trail development. We cap every tour group at eight participants (and heritage trails at six) because we believe guiding is a conversation, not a lecture. Our preparation for each tour involves reviewing primary sources — Kenya National Archives records, Land Settlement Commission reports, oral-history transcripts — not just repeating received narratives. What we cannot do: we cannot guarantee weather on outdoor trails, we cannot promise that specific community members will be available, and we cannot compress our slower, more thorough style of guiding into a one-hour 'highlights' format. If you want a fast overview, other operators in Nakuru offer that; we are not the right fit for every visitor, and we think it's better to say so here.
Booking with Historyvoyagez felt like calling a friend who happens to know everything about Kenya's history. Miriam called us the evening before our tour to walk through the itinerary and ask what we were most curious about. No tour operator has ever done that for me.
