Kenya's living heritage doesn't sit still in a museum: it's in the way a grandmother grinds sorghum flour, the pattern a Kikuyu elder explains in a carved calabash, or the call-and-response structure of a Tugen work song. Our Cultural Experiences bring you into direct, respectful contact with these living traditions — in homes, workshop compounds, and community gathering spaces around Nakuru. Each session is co-designed with the host community: families agree to host, elders choose what to share, and participants are briefed beforehand on how to engage respectfully. We take no more than four visitors per session to preserve the intimacy that makes these encounters meaningful rather than transactional. The sessions are in Swahili or the community's mother tongue, with live English interpretation throughout.
Each format focuses on a different dimension of Kenya's living cultural heritage.
A structured 90-minute conversation with one or two community elders, guided by a Historyvoyagez interpreter. Topics are agreed in advance with the elder — recent favourites have included land inheritance customs, traditional medicine boundaries, and memories of the Lancaster House negotiations heard on a community radio.
Watch and try your hand at basket weaving, calabash carving, or bead-pattern design with a master craftsperson in their own workspace. Sessions last two hours and end with the option to commission a piece directly from the artisan at a price they set themselves.
Join a family preparing dishes from a repertoire passed down across four or more generations — irio, ugali variations, fermented milk preparations, and wild-herb seasoning traditions. You cook alongside the family, eat together, and leave with hand-written recipe notes in English.
When timing aligns with a community's ceremonial calendar, we arrange respectful observation access — harvest thanksgivings, age-grade initiations (at the public stage only), or planting ceremonies. These are scheduled six to eight weeks in advance and are never guaranteed; we notify interested visitors first.
We share a portion of every session fee directly with the host family — always, without exception.
Cultural Experience sessions are available Wednesday through Saturday, starting at 09:00 or 14:00. Each session accommodates a maximum of four visitors. Session fees are agreed at booking and include a community contribution — a fixed share paid directly to the host family or community fund, not pooled through us. We tell you exactly how much goes where, because opacity in that relationship damages trust. Sessions are confirmed at least 72 hours in advance to give the host family adequate preparation time. If a session must be cancelled by the community for reasons of bereavement, ceremony conflict, or personal circumstance, we reschedule at no extra cost or refund in full. We cannot guarantee specific elders or specific artisans — we work with people, not props, and people have lives.
The heirloom cooking session in July 2023 was the highlight of a three-week Kenya trip — and I say that having also done a Maasai Mara safari. The grandmother we cooked with had learned these recipes from her grandmother, who remembered pre-colonial cooking methods. We ate together, laughed together, and I cried a little on the way back to the hotel.
